Pool Covers Vs Pool Safety Covers

In our part of the country, pool season is pretty much over, and we’re doing a lot of pool closings. We’re often asked about the pros and cons of the various pool covers and pool safety covers.

Which one you buy for your pool depends on your budget, and how much work you want to do at pool closing and opening time.

Pool Safety Covers

Right off the bat, we have to say we recommend pool safety covers. These solid vinyl covers automatically slide on and off with the turn of a key or the push of a button. They are ideal for everyday use and not just to cover your pool in winter. When your pool is not in use, you can rest assured that your little ones or pet can’t fall in the pool with a solid pool safety cover locked in place.

They nearly eliminate evaporation and chemical loss when in use and they keep the pool cleaner, which reduces cleaning costs. They also act as a solar cover helping to hold in the heat. All of these cost savings mean the automatic pool cover system can pay for itself in a few years.  When closed they are locked, preventing unwanted entry. They hold enormous amounts of weight so if a person or animal were to fall on the cover it would hold them (think water bed). This is why we think pool safety covers are the best option. Full disclosure, we are dealers for GLI Pool Products.

Pin Down Pool Covers aka Winter Pool Covers

These pool covers come in two materials – mesh and solid vinyl or polypropylene. They are manually installed over your pool and anchored to the pool deck. They can be a little difficult to get on and off, so generally are just put on once at the end of the pool season, and taken off at the beginning of the swim season.

The solid vinyl covers will need a pool cover pump to remove rainwater. The mesh pool covers keep leaves and debris out of your pool, but allow rainwater and melting snow to drain into your pool, so no need for a pool cover pump.

Whatever cover you decide on, make sure you winterize your pool properly – just ask us about our pool closing service. Call Mid Atlantic Pool Services today at 410-598-9740 to schedule an appointment.
